Workplace Literacy

To assure a literate and job-ready workforce, the Library provides a variety of programs that promote basic skill development. A regional Adult Learning Center serves adults who cannot read or have low-level literacy skills, people whose primary language is other than English, and young adults who have left school and are looking for basic workforce preparation skills.

The Miller Center’s Adult Learning Center houses the Mid-Suffolk Regional Literacy Office for Literacy Suffolk, Inc.. This regional office coordinates tutor training and recruitment, student testing and assessment, and tutor-student matching for one-to-one literacy instruction in the mid-Suffolk area.

Services and resources include:

  • One-on-one literacy tutoring
  • GED classes
  • ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) instruction
  • Citizenship preparation
  • Computer training on word processing, spreadsheet, and other software applications
  • Workshops on workplace etiquette and job readiness skills
  • Access to print, media, and online resources to support basic skill development

Major partners include Literacy Suffolk, Inc. and the Patchogue-Medford School District's Adult Literacy Consortium.
